Today I was going to blog about the Christmas party I organised last weekend or maybe a witty entry about banned Christmas toys, but alas, my mainboard decided to cease working today. Without warning, it suddenly announced “screw this” by rebooting, and then I sat there for ten minutes watching my POST screen for movement, alternating between calling it sweetie and telling it I will rip out it’s CPU if it doesn’t boot on the count of three. A dozen reboots and many swear words later, I unplugged all of the hardware and rebooted again in hopes that it was a hardware error, but it was not to be, it still refused to go past POST or even allow me into the bios.

So here I sit on my mothers computer, trackball mouse in one hand, typing with a prehistoric keyboard and thinking about how I want to burn that assrat of a mainboard for failing a few months out of warranty. It must have come with a built in timer that counts down 12 months till failure from the minute it’s installed.

Thankfully my hard drives are still working, but I can’t use them on this computer because it has different hardware (Windows, why can’t you be more like Linux?) and a friend has offered me his old mainboard. So if all goes to plan we will be back to regular posts about monkeys and people doing stupid things in public in no time.

While I’m jamming sharp objects into my mainboard to teach it a lesson tinkering, feel free to talk amongst yourselves and if you have a moment to spare, please nominate me in The 2006 Australian Blog Awards.

Now, where did I put that sledge hammer…

Update #1…

All systems are go. The mainboard my friend gave me worked a charm and the new Athlon64 3200+ CPU I purchased today is a big improvement. ๐Ÿ™‚ I wasn’t sure if the hard drives would play nice with the new hardware, or even boot at all, but they did and after some driver updates everything is running nicely.

I also received a Logitech G7 mouse as a early Christmas present today. ๐Ÿ˜€

Update #2…

My old 350w PSU isn’t giving enough juice and is making booting up a terribly frustrating process. I hope to have a new 480w on Monday.

  1. My computer did the EXACT same thing about a month ago. I left it off for a few days and, one day I sporadically turned it on to see if it would work and… voilรƒย ! It did.

I opened up the tower and blew any dust out over a week ago and it’s been fine ever since. Maybe my motherboard just decided to take a short lil’ vacation?

  2. Ergh. Don’t you just hate it when technology fails? But at least you have your mom’s computer to use..when mine decides to go out on me, I don’t have an alternate except to go out & rent a computer!

Speaking of failure..I can’t reach the Australian blog awards site.. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  3. update: someone had to get a faster pc than mine. i hate you. ๐Ÿ˜› now you have no pb fund….and to add to that… phobia is evil….dont let him tell you otherwise! ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. Imee: There are about four computers in this house I could use, plus probably more with spare parts. Keep trying the awards site; it might just be getting a lot of hits.

Gussy: I would take a good look at yourself before you go about accusing others of things… Or should that be blaming others? No wait, it’s both.

  5. Kitta,

It looks like you guys had a great time at the Xmas party in the park. I especially liked the photos of you guys lynching Santa.

But, please, please, please tell me you guys didnt really put cooked meat and raw meat together on the same plate. Tell me the photos are lies!

    Tell me damn you!!

  6. Ok lemme be completely honest. I have no idea what the heck a mainboard is! But Im glad you are all fixed ๐Ÿ™‚

    As for nominating you?

    Done and Done.

    You rock.

    And monkeys rock too.

  7. Hi kitta, It looks like you had a good time at the party. It look so warm there! right now we have 6 inches to 8 inches of snow and it 0 degree F.

I hope Phabia didn’t drink to many beers HHAHAHHAHA

I saw Noodle singing on the video and was that your voice on the video? Marry Xmas to all of you there.

  8. haha! i love this part of your blog ‘ alternating between calling it sweetie and telling it I will rip out itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs CPU if it doesnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt boot on the count of three’ … made me laugh so much ๐Ÿ˜‰

  9. Thanks for nominating me everyone. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ricky Moon: My friends keep telling me I should start one. The PB Fund has taken a bit of a fall during festive season. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Darkhorse: That wasn’t a plate, it was a BBQ, we would never mix our meats.

    Hope: I have a saying “I’m not evil, I’m deliciously menacing.” ๐Ÿ˜‰

Christina: Well, if I unplug the DVD/CD and HDD’s it boots up fine, but that tends to devoid the point of it. When the HDD’s are plugged in the first few tries it won’t even show POST, after a few more tries it may show a bit of post, some more and I might be lucky enough to see windows start to boot. I have got it to windows a few times, but it always ends up rebooting, so it is pretty unstable at the moment. I used the PSU calculator to estimate roughly what I’m using and I’m at about 360w, right now I have a 350w SmartBlue PSU, I thought about getting a new PSU when I purchased the CPU last week, but I wanted I’d try my luck first and hope my old one could handle it. It clearly can’t. ๐Ÿ˜•
