Old to new

I have been busy upgrading my computer over the last few days, but in my typical style, I did it the hard way. After obtaining the new hardware (which I will mention later in this post), I got so excited that I didn’t even bother to sort out all my old stuff and attacked my case vigorously, installing all the fun new hardware. However, upon running it for the first time, windows would not work. Oh no. I thought it would crap it’s self, but I never thought it would just go “yeah right, bugger off”. Not to worry, a plan was hatched where windows was running using the old hardware so the old could be moved to the new. All was well again. I just hope I didn’t forget any of the old, I always tend to forget something. Last time I forgot my favourites and emails. Now onto the upgrades…

All that is missing is a sexy new case and a DVD drive. What was wrong with the old case? Well, it was a nice case to look at, but inside it was not so great. It seemed suck in dust no matter how I set up the fans and in the end, it stared to really piss me off. Goodbye bluey, it was cool. (Well, no it was warm. You never really offered me places to put any fans.)

I just realized what I forgot. I forgot to copy the font’s folder, fantastic. šŸ˜¦

Argh yeh when I changed operating systems I forgot my fonts and my favourites. GRRR. Well, isn’t this a good excuse to go on a mad font downloading spree? =p

I did not know that Hyundai made ram. I am aware that they make cars, seeing as how Mark drives an Elantra GT which is a Hyundai. Ah well. Thought i would say hi tho…

    Blimey you’re clever!
So how did you know what stuff would work with what?
And the settings on the motherboard? You have to set up little dip switches don’t you?
    Well done anyhow!

I assume since the ram is made by hyundai it’s smaller and more fuel efficient.

Iris, right after I posted I went on a font downloading spree. šŸ™‚

Ian, I researched it. You can’t really go too wrong, (well some people can) just read up on the product websites and ask around about setups. I’m not fantastic with hardware, I have my brother around for advice.

Next week on Keddy says the dandiest things… šŸ˜‰

I repair laptops and PC’s for a living (10+ years now) and see all sorts of problems when combining various Nvidia chipsets (you have some on your motherboard) with ATI graphics chipsets. I just hope you don’t encounter any problems! They may show up while gaming. Aside from that, congrats on getting a faster system built yourself. Lord knows I get enough people who have attempted that endeavour thinking it’s simple and f’up the whole process, hehe p.s. If you plan on using Linux, go with an Nvidia graphics chipset. šŸ™‚

40GB is an upgrade? I thought that 80GB was the smallest you could get (brand-new) these days :op

Inmyrem, that is true, problems can occur when combining some chipsets with other chipsets. I asked around about this setup before and had a handful of people (mostly gamers) tell me it was a good one. No problems so far, I’ve now tested it on a few games and there are no problems. I agree with what you are saying, I researched everything for about 3 months before hand. Most people jump in and hope for the best.

Jack, no you can get 40’s, I only had enough money for a 40 and I already had a 20 anyways.

Melissa, glad you like my site, I hope you have a good rest of the week too.

If you’re still having probs with that A7N8X motherboard, I recommend you check the memory settings and that you placed the two memory sticks in correct slots. I have the same mobo and it supports “dual channel” memory access. For that to work you have to have the sticks placed correctly (it’s in the manual). Also check the memory manufacturers site for correct memory timings for your speed of memory. Best place to find help for your motherboard is at http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/ , check the Asus area. They have good FAQ’s and searching the forum usually solves quite a bit of the questiongs. Cheers!

Tommi, I never said I was having problems with the mobo. I knew about the dual channel memory access even before I got it, and I set up the RAM as it said to in the manual. Thanks anyway. šŸ™‚
